Eau de Toilette – The Benefits of A Lighter Fragrance

Are you a spritzer or a dabber when it comes to wearing perfume ? Do you enjoy being lavish with the scent so that more of the skin can exude a gorgeous sillage, the trail of scent one leaves, or are you a more discreet perfume user, preferring to concentrate a stronger eau de parfum formulation on the key pulse points ?

As we move into the summer months the benefits of “spritzing’ with a lighter eau de toilette become more appealing. It’s refreshing and an instant uplift in hotter weather. There is also a theory that a lighter scent works well in hotter weather or climates, as scents are somehow more magnified by the heat. There is no doubt that many of the higher head or top notes in perfumery, most often the citrus notes or lighter florals are beautiful in an eau de toilette strength as they can “fly” more easily, whereas deeper base notes may be more suited to a stronger concentration, where their depth and warmth develop more slowly.

Signature 100ml Eau de Toilette

We have always specialised in producing some top quality eaux de toilettes. Our Signature collection, the scented heritage of the house, was originally only offered in eau de toilette strengths and many of these fragrances work beautifully in this lighter concentration. It’s ideal if you don’t want to overwhelm, for daytime or office wear, the eau de toilette may be more comfortable and appropriate, while the eau de parfum offers more depth, which can be nice for evening.

30ml Eau de Toilette

Artillery Collection 30ml Eau de Toilette

Our Signature eau de toilettes are available in both a handy 30ml size, or for those who know they love to spritz a cost effective yet lavish 100ml bottle.

Bear in mind although a smaller size is always a good option for a first time buy or a gift, in the end if you love the scent the larger size is always better value.

Sometimes experiencing a fragrance in a lighter concentration is a better way to become familiar with the scent before taking the plunge to a more concentrated eau de parfum.

You might like to explore our Artillery Collection, a range of seven distinctive and classic scents originally developed with our gentlemen in mind but loved by all for their timeless fragrances and historic ingredients.

Artillery No 1 Le Premiere Eau de Toilette

Artillery No 1 Le Premiere, is our version of the classic Eau de Cologne. Loved by Napoleon who apparently had vast quantities supplied wherever he was, a discerning gentleman who clearly appreciated the lift a spritz of fine fragrance can provide.

Eau de Cologne was originally created by Italian perfumer, Giovanni Maria Farina, in 1709, who was at the time living in Cologne.  In 1708, Farina wrote to his brother Jean Baptiste: "I have found a fragrance that reminds me of an Italian spring morning, of mountain daffodils and orange blossoms after the rain". He named his fragrance Eau de Cologne, in honour of his new hometown.

Eau de Cologne, has since come to be a generic term for scented formulations in typical concentration of 2–5% of essential oils in ethanol and often contains a blend of citrus oils including, bergamot, lemon, orange, mandarin, bitter orange or petitgrain and neroli.

Herbal notes of lavender, rosemary and thyme are also common, and feature extensively in our Artillery No 3 Hungary Water, another historic formulation, created in 1370 for Queen Elizabeth 1st of Hungary. Based on invigorating rosemary, combined with lemon balm, lemon peel, mint and rose, this magically restorative fragrance it was quickly adopted by the Hungarian court.

Today, our Signature eaux de toilette and our Artillery Collection fragrances are all made at a 10% concentration, rather punchier than their historic counterparts.

Light enough to feel fresh and uplifting, strong enough to have some staying power.
